Lieutenant Colonel Brian P. Huysman was raised in Ohio and commissioned a Second Lieutenant in June 2002 with a Bachelor of Arts from The Ohio State University Naval ROTC program.

 

After completing The Basic Officer Course and Infantry Officer Course in May 2003, Second Lieutenant Huysman was assigned to Company A, First Battalion, Fifth Marines and deployed twice to Iraq in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM II (Al Fallujah) and III (Ar Ramadi).  Upon completion of these deployments, First Lieutenant Huysman was assigned to School of Infantry-West where he served in the school operations section, then as a staff officer and company commander in Infantry Training Battalion.

 

In February 2009, Captain Huysman commanded Company C, First Battalion, Fifth Marines and deployed to Nawa District, Helmand Province, Afghanistan in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM 9.2.  He then commanded Weapons Company in Sangin District, Helmand Province, Afghanistan for Operation ENDURING FREEDOM 11.1.  Captain Huysman completed his assignment aboard Camp Pendleton when he was assigned as Operations Officer, Headquarters Battalion, 1st Marine Division.

 

In October 2012, Captain Huysman was assigned to the Marine Corps Congressional Fellowship Program and began service in the Washington, D.C. office of U.S. Senator Jack Reed (Rhode Island).  In January 2014, Major Huysman was assigned as a Legislative Liaison, then Deputy Director for HQ, U.S. Special Operations Command Office of Legislative Affairs (Joint) in Washington, D.C.

 

In September 2016, Major Huysman served as the Battalion Executive Officer for First Battalion, Third Marines in Hawai’i and deployed to Okinawa, Japan in support of the Unit Deployment Program, Forward Deployed Forces – Hawaii.  Major Huysman was then assigned as Expeditionary Operations Branch Head, G-3, Headquarters, Marine Corps Forces, Pacific.

 

In July 2019, Lieutenant Colonel Huysman was assigned as the Joint and Interagency Section Head, Marine Corps Tactics and Operations Group, MAGTF-Training Command, Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in California.

 

Lieutenant Colonel Huysman assumed command of Wounded Warrior Battalion-West on 3 December 2019.

 

Lieutenant Colonel Huysman has graduated from U.S. Army Airborne School, U.S. Army Maneuver Captain Career Course, Marine Corps Command and Staff College-Distance Education Program, and Joint Combined Warfare School (JPME II).

 

Lieutenant Colonel Huysman’s personal decorations include the Bronze Star Medal (gold star in lieu of third award, with two valor devices), Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (gold star in lieu of third award, with one valor device), Combat Action Ribbon with gold star, the Marine Corps Combat Instructor Ribbon, and the NATO-ISAF Medal.
