Refer a Marine
Interested in getting more support for a Marine from Wounded Warrior Regiment (WWR)? Learn more about the assignment process and the specific steps to start a package, and the array of support options and resources are available to recovering Marines and their families.

Referral to Wounded Warrior Regiment

If a Marine’s medical needs have surpassed the current units capabilities to support a request for assignment to or support from a WWR element can be initiated by the parent command or medical officer. All requests for transfer to the WWR must be endorsed by a Battalion/Squadron level Commander (utilize the form in the link below). To review WWR assignment criteria, please visit our leaders and staff page

Referral Documentation

Three documents must be completed:

  1. A command endorsement

  2. A medical questionnaire

  3. A medical release signed in ink or CAC by service member

Referral Submission

Once all three documents are complete, please e-mail your completed package to your respective area of responsibility - Wounded Warrior Battalion-West (WWBNW_REFERRALS@USMC.MIL) or Wounded Warrior Battalion-East (WWBnEastReferrals@usmc.onmicrosoft.com). *You will be notified within two business days of receipt and a status update. Please contact us at (East) 910-449-2816 or (West) 760-763-9090 respectfully if confirmation of receipt is not received.

The Warrior Battalion West (WWBn-W) area of responsibility is generally west of the Mississippi River to Okinawa, Japan, Guam, and Hawaii. The Wounded Warrior Battalion West (WWBn-E) area of responsibility is generally all areas east of the Mississippi River as well as detachments at San Antonio Military Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas and Landstuhl, Germany.

Potential outcomes of your request are provided below:

1.  No direct support from the WWR, the Marine is receiving sufficient support by their command and the needs are not complex in nature to warrant  support from the WWR.  These will be assigned to the Wounded Warrior Regiment Call Center for periodic check-up and support requirements can be elevated as they develop.

2.  Externally supported.  The Marine remains at their parent command but receive the full support and backing of a Recovery Care Coordinator (RCC) to enhance their recovery and reintegration while retaining their current command support system.  Often other support can be added for transition or specific needs and this is the best solution if a Marine is able to remain within their community.

2.  Approved for Temporary Additional Duty (TAD) to a WWR unit.  The Marine will be attached to the WWR unit for a period of normally 90 days.  They will receive full complement of support and resources from the WWR as well as reside within our spaces so they can start to focus singularly on their medical recovery.  This allows time for parent commands to complete any administrative requirements or investigations.  Near the end of the TAD period, a determination will be made by the Commanding Officer of WWBn if the Marine would benefit from additional TAD, Transfer by Service Record or a return to their command.

1.  Transfer by Service Record as defined in MCO 1000.6 much like a humanitarian transfer.  In this instance, your Marine will be permanently transferred to a WWR unit for recovery, rehabilitation, and reintegration to service or veteran status.  They receive full complement of support and resources available from the WWR.

Refer to a Recovery Care Coordinator

RECOVERY CARE COORDINATOR ASSIGNMENT AND SUPPORT

Recovery Care Coordinators (RCCs) provide non-medical care to Marines and ensures a smooth transition either back to full duty, or to the civilian community.  RCC are one of the WWR’s strongest elements that may be assigned to a Marine following a referral package submission or a request for support.

Should a Recovery Care Coordinator be assigned, what can I expect?

The RCC program supports Marines whether they are joined to the Wounded Warrior Regiment, located with their parent unit, resident in a military or civilian hospital, or joined to an I&I. The following may be considerations when requesting RCC support in addition to wounds, illnesses, and injuries:

  • Is not expected to return to duty within 180 days
  • Has multiple and/or complex medical and non-medical needs (i.e. TBI or severe PTSD)
  • Lacks a stable family environment or has complex family needs (i.e. EFMP)
  • Is financially strained
  • Has been referred to the Integrated Disability Evaluation System and requires support through the process

For assistance in requesting RCC Support contact the Sergeant Merlin German Wounded Warrior Call Center 24/7 at 1-877-487-6299.

WWR staff is also available to assist you with the request for referral if needed.

Be prepared to present all known medical conditions, non-medical needs, and justification for the request.

Once the request has been reviewed by the WWBn or the WWOC and approved for RCC support, a RCC will be assigned.  The Wounded Warrior Battalion will reach out to the command to notify them that a RCC is being assigned.  The RCC will then reach out to the parent command contact listed on the referral form to introduce themselves and discuss the Marine's needs as well as reach out to the Marine and begin to assist them on their transition back to full duty, or civilian life.
