Sgt. Maj. Jose A. Acero
Sergeant Major, Wounded Warrior Regiment

     Sergeant Major Jose A. Acero was born in Los Angeles, California on 11 January 1977. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on 27 January 1998, where he attended recruit training Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, California. Upon completion of recruit training, Private First Class Acero attended the Avionics Communications Electricians Courses in Pensacola, Florida and Cherry Point, North Carolina. Upon completion of his training, Corporal Acero was assigned to his first duty station at Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 39 at Camp Pendleton, California.  

    During his tour at MALS-39, Corporal Acero deployed with the 15th MEU aboard the USS Bonhomme Richard from January through August of 2000. In November of 2002, Sergeant Acero deployed with the 11th MEU aboard the USS Belleau Wood in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.   

    In January 2003, Sergeant Acero received orders to Drill Instructor School at MCRD San Diego, California.  Upon completion of training, Sergeant Acero was assigned to Second Battalion, Golf Company. During his tour he served as a Drill Instructor, Senior Drill Instructor, Series Gunnery Sergeant, and Battalion Operations Chief.

    In August 2006, Staff Sergeant Acero reported to Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 16 at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, California where he served as an Avionics Work Center Supervisor and a Quality Assurance Representative. In January of 2008, Gunnery Sergeant Acero deployed with MALS-16 to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

    In October 2008, Gunnery Sergeant Acero reported to Officer Candidates School in Quantico, Virginia. During his tour at OCS, Gunnery Sergeant Acero served as a Sergeant Instructor, Platoon Sergeant, Company Gunnery Sergeant and as the Battalion Drill Master. 

     In December of 2011, Gunnery Sergeant Acero reported for duty as the Avionics Communication and Navigations Work Center Supervisor for Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 29 aboard Marine Corps Air Station New River in Jacksonville, North Carolina. 

    In January of 2013, Gunnery Sergeant Acero was promoted to the rank of First Sergeant and received orders to 2d Low Altitude Air Defense Battalion aboard Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, North Carolina where he served as the Alpha Battery First Sergeant.

    In February of 2015, First Sergeant Acero reported to 1st Battalion, 4th Marines, 1st Marine Division where he served as the Weapons Company, Headquarters and Service Company, and Bravo Company First Sergeant. During his assignment, he deployed in support of the Marine Rotational Force Darwin in Australia and as part of the Battalion Landing Team with the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit.

   First Sergeant Acero then received orders to Headquarters Battalion, 2d Marine Division where he served as the Communications Company First Sergeant.  

   In December of 2018, First Sergeant Acero was promoted to the rank of Sergeant Major and received orders to 2d Transportation Support Battalion aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, North Carolina where he served as the Battalion Sergeant Major. 

    Sergeant Major Acero reported into 2d Battalion, Sixth Marines in December 2020 during which he deployed on the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit as the Battalion Landing Team into Sixth Fleet from March 2022 to October 2022.

    In November of 2022, Sergeant Major Acero received orders and reported into Second Combat Readiness Regiment. While at this unit, he was seriously injured and was then assigned in April 2023 to Wounded Warrior Battalion East to serve as a Recovering Service Member to rehabitate and recover from his injuries. Sergeant Major Acero was able to recover and then received orders to serve as the Regimental Sergeant Major for Wounded Warrior Regiment and he reported into that unit on 30 September 2024.

    Sergeant Major Acero's personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal with 1 Gold Star, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with 3 Gold Stars, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with 2 Gold Stars.
